• Charles Abelmann is a filmmaker and educational leader with a background in research, policy and practice. After completing his doctoral degree at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE), he was a lecturer and then joined the World Bank as a senior education specialist. He has worked with education systems around the world. He has also led public and private schools in the role of Director or Head of School. He was previously the head of the Laboratory Schools at the University of Chicago. He has extensive experience working in China and working on cross cultural issues related to global citizenship. He previously directed and produced Learning by Dewey in China, a film about John Dewey’s travels to China by retracing his steps with twelve student filmmakers. Subsequently, he directed English Hustle (distributed by New Day Films) a short documentary exploring the rise and fall of China’s English online tutoring industry through the perspective of online teachers. Abelmann’s film, The Smallest Living Things, tells the story of a self-made farmer’s quest to care for microbiomes. The film is published in Palladium Magazine. Recently, he has done commissioned work for the World Bank Identification for Development initiative, creating stories about brigades helping people acquire identification cards in Mozambique. He is available for commissioned work related to education, international development, and family histories.

    Lucia Fox-Shapiro is a documentary Editor and Researcher in the Washington DC area. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from The University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts in 2021, where she focused on editing and documentary storytelling. She worked as an Assistant Editor on the documentary Imagining the Indian: The Fight Against Native American Mascoting, directed by Aviva Kempner and Ben West, which was a finalist for the Lavine/Ken Burns Prize for Film. She was the lead editor and researcher for the documentary A Pocketful of Miracles: A Tale of Two Siblings, about director Aviva Kempner’s mother and uncle’s survival of the Holocaust and miraculous reunion after the war. The film won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the JxJ: Washington Jewish Film Festival and was rated three out of four stars by the Washington Post.
